Social and Twilight Sailing

Each Wednesday evening the TYC holds a social Twilight Sail in the tranquil waters of Cleveland Bay.

Skippers enjoy a social race around fixed marks in the bay, and it is a popular activity enjoyed by both competitive sailors and social racing members being a great way to unwind mid-week.  Starts are a staggered (or pursuit style) start which sees the slower boats starting first, with the aim to have the fleet finishing within a short time of each other. A presentation is held after each Twilight sail to award placings and draw the winner of the Wednesday night members draw.

Skippers of boats nominating can view their starting times here -> Twilight Sailing Start Times - Wednesday 22nd May 2024

TYC Twilight Sailing Instructions

If you are interested in becoming a crew member or wanting to learn to sail, Twilight Sailing is a great opportunity to meet Skippers and Crew, as it encourages people to participate whilst learning about sailing.   This great sport offers a way to be social, get fit, learn a new skill and combine a love of being on the water.

It is important to remember that no guarantee of placing you on a boat is provided.  You are welcome to either email the Club to express your interest, or phone the Club advise you are interested in participating.

The TYC Sailing Committee have been utilising SailSys as their Race Management since the beginning of the 2020 Sailing Season.

If you are a visitor to the Townsville Yacht Club you will need to purchase a SailPass at a cost of $15 per Twilight Sail, and is arranged at the club, with assistance from our friendly staff.

Club members, who are either guests of the skippers or regular crew are required to added to the boat's 'Crew List' in SailSys.

This is critical as it forms the crew list that is required for safety reasons.

What is a SailPass?

A SailPass Membership allows you to sail a designated number of times before you need to subscribe to annual membership. Any money you have spent on the Sail Pass Membership will be credited to your annual subscription fee if you decide to become a member of Townsville Yacht Club.

SailPass is a means by which a person who is not a TYC Sailing Member can go sailing and you (and your skipper) can rest easy knowing

  • that all crew are at least temporarily affiliated with Townsville Yacht Club
  • all crew have some level of Personal Accident Insurance
  • all crew have a current Australian Sailing number (this is issued to you with your first SailPass and is unique to you).
