Background and History

In the 1950s, the Townsville Motor Boat Club leased land in Plume Street from the Townsville Harbour Board. That Club initially built a clubhouse (shed) on that land, then in 1969, the present clubhouse was built. In 1984 the Townsville Sailing Club joined with the Townsville Motor Boat Club to form the Townsville Motor Boat and Yacht Club Limited (TMBYC), and the Townsville Harbour Board transferred the lease of the Plume Street site to TMBYC.

In 1984 TMBYC leased the seabed adjoining the Plume Street site from the Department of Harbours and Marine; the lease was for a period to July 2008. In 1985 TMBYC added further piles in the seabed leased area, these were laid by the Harbour Board at a cost to TMBYC and TMBYC built a 65 berth floating marina around some of the piles.

In 1998 the land in Plume Street was declared “non strategic” by the Port Authority and as a result, the Club was able to secure a freehold title for the Plume Street site.

On 3 August 2000 the Club took a 30 year lease of the seabed from the State and in 2008 commenced construction of a 165 berth pontoon marina at a cost of over $8,000,000.00; this marina was completed in July 2009.

In June 2009 TMBYC changed its trading name to Townsville Yacht Club (TYC).
